GIVING SIGHT, LIGHTING SOULS – The essence of our work

AKHAND JYOTI EYE HOSPITAL (AJEH) is the most effective eye hospital in Bihar working to eradicate blindness from the state and as a result reduce poverty. We choose to target the poor, blind patient from rural Bihar rather than seek the affluent patients in towns of the state. This focused approach on the blind patient has made us the largest eye hospital in Eastern India, and in less than 6 years, we have shown that by sticking to our primary aim of eradicating blindness, we can also:
1. Build up a successful teaching eye hospital in the rural heartland.
2. Educate and train girls from rural Bihar to become highly skilled ophthalmic personnel at the hospital.
3. Improve the socio-economic level of entire communities across Bihar by :
· Giving sight
· Enabling people to regain their earning capacity
· Working actively to provide equal opportunities to girls
· Identifying and grooming talent at the village level
· Providing jobs
· Enhancing a sense of community
Our theory of change is that every person has the right to move from DARKNESS to LIGHT and from IGNORANCE to KNOWLEDGE - restoring sight will help people improve their quality of life and enable them to overcome ignorance, illiteracy & ultimately, poverty. We have been able to make significant progress despite the fact that we still do not have access to mains electricity.
Our strategic choices have been guided by the sacrosanct vision we have - blind free Bihar by 2020. While following an avowed pledge like this, we do bind ourselves - but that is precisely what we set out to do in the first place.

Why is blindness in rural Bihar a major concern? |
 |
Three factors stand out – inability to pay, shortage of eye surgeons and lack of access to quality eye services.
We have been able to crack the last two drawb.... |

Outreach - Our core activity
|
 |
Members of the outreach
team go village to village 4
days prior to an eye camp
and search out the blind
with the help of local
volunteers. The blind are
then motivated to come to
the camp for a check up.
The team is always on the
road and have to adjust to
all environments. |

Our Eternal Guiding Light and Inspiration.
SAGE, VISIONARY & REFORMER.
Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya (1911 - 1990), |
The founder of All World Gayatri Pariwar (www.awgp.org) has inspired millions to reform their thoughts for the betterment of self, family & the society. The three principles of good living namely imbibing the ideals & values of God, self-restraint & self-refinement and selfless public service laid down by him have guided us through our work amongst the rural mass. His writings continue to inspire people to solve the problems of life.
AKHAND JYOTI EYE HOSPITAL is a living example of his real teachings – hard-core, verifiable work at the ground level. This single eye hospital project is designed to carry out 4 of the 7 movements of THOUGHT REVOLUTION advocated by him – health, education, women’s empowerment & awakening & self-reliance. |
